Children's Home
Children's Services
The Children's Room in the Norwell Public Library offers an extensive collection of materials including: books, magazines, audio books on cassette and CD, music CDs, videos on VHS and
DVDs, CD-ROMs, and puppets. We also have a section of materials for parents and teachers and offer a number of programs and special events for children of all ages. Please check our calendar of events for our schedule. For pictures from recent children's events, click here
Computers
There are four computer stations for patrons to use, two of which have Internet access. Children can use computers to look up books in the catalog, access databases to help them with their homework, or play games.
Library Cards
Children of any age may apply for a library card. A child's application must be signed by a parent or legal guardian if they are under 14 years of age.
Regular Programs & Activities
All ages: Monthly Performers Free performances by a wide range of performing artists, including storytellers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers and others, are offered each month through the generous sponsorship of The Friends of the Norwell Public Library. Youth in grades 4 - 8: Norwell Youth Library Council (YLC) The Norwell Youth Library Council offers youth in grades 4 through 8 the opportunity to serve their community in a variety of ways. Under the guidance of the youth services librarian, YLC members aid in the selection of library materials, plan and implement library programs, and offer suggestions for enhancing library services. No qualifications for membership are necessary other than a desire to participate in community service. The Youth Library Council meets one Saturday a month -- please refer to the online Calendar for dates and times.
Ages 0-3 years: Books for Babies is a 20-minute toddler program for adult and baby together featuring songs, fingerplays, nursery rhymes and stories. Older siblings may attend if they so wish, but adults are responsible for the behavior of any children they bring. The six-to-eight week program runs three times throughout the school year. Registration is not required. Click on "Calendar" for program dates.
Ages 3.5 - 5 years: Preschool Story Time is a half-hour program for children ages 3.5 through 5 years incorporating stories, rhymes, songs, and fingerplays. Parents do not attend with their children but are requested to remain in the library. The six-to-eight week program runs four times throughout the year. Registration is necessary. Tours & Group Visits
The Children's Department offers library tours and/or storytelling sessions for classrooms, child care centers, Scout and other groups. The tours are available by appointment only and group leaders are urged to call at least two weeks in advance to schedule a tour. The Youth Services Librarian is also available to visit classrooms, schedule permitting. See the Parents & Teachers link for further details.
