ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The Norwell Public Library Foundation was incorporated in May 2005. It has received approval from the Internal Revenue Service as an exempt organization under Section 501(c) (3). Donations are deductible under Section 170.

Kathie Fitzgerald is the current President and Tracy White is the Treasurer.

The stated purpose of the Foundation is twofold:

Principally, to raise funds for furniture, fixtures and equipment to be used in a new library facility.

Secondarily, to support projects and activities undertaken by the Norwell Public Library on an ongoing basis which are not normally within the library's annual budget.

Fundraising

Fundraising activities benefiting the Library and the Library Foundation will be conducted entirely by volunteers.

The activities will be conducted in the town of Norwell, Massachusetts at the Library and other locations as needed.

The current focus of the fundraising will be that portion of the building project which is not eligible for partial reimbursement under the Massachusetts Library Commissioners Grant provisions.

This includes furnishings, fixtures, equipment within the library and landscaping and parking on the exterior.

The library building project is a large one and is likely to be the subject of much debate. Therefore, extreme care must be taken in the raising of funds. Under no circumstances will funds be solicited or accepted without a specific purpose which can be realized with or without construction of a new library.

The "Norwell Library Building Project" prepared in the fall of 2004 for the Massachusetts Library Commissioners as part of the grant application delineated the various sections of a new library and specified what would be needed to properly equip each of these areas. Since the fundraising will be undertaken primarily to pay for the contents of the library, the information provided in the building project provides a road map to follow in designating the proceeds of various events for specific items and areas.

For example, the plan calls for a "preschool/toddler area" of 285s.f. The furniture/equipment requirements are listed and include display shelving, child-sized table & chairs, loveseat, 2 lounge chairs, toy/storage bin. An approximate cost of these items based on current prices is about $2,700. Thus an event or activity could be planned with its proceeds publicly earmarked for this purpose. The advantage to this approach is that, should the current library building project prove impossible, this money will still be earmarked to provide/improve a preschool/toddler area, allowing donors to be assured that their money will be used as "advertised".
